15 FREE Resources For New Puppy Owners

So you got a new puppy, congrats! I know we absolutely adore puppies, but who doesn’t? From their big puppy eyes, their little baby paws, to their soft puppy cries… we can’t get enough. When we first brought Navy home we tried to do as much research as we could online to prepare ourselves and our home for our first puppy. We found some fabulous information from reliable sources, and we stumbled across some not so great ones. Don’t worry, we did the hard work for you and compiled these great resources into one list.

Read through this post for some of our most visited sources for reliable, free puppy information.

Zak George’s Dog Training Revolution
Of course we had to start this post with Zak George’s YouTube channel. I don’t know where I would be without his incredibly helpful training videos. From puppy training, to puppy biting, Zak George has it all covered and more. I’ve also heard amazing things about his book on dog training, yet we have not read it ourselves.

McCann Dog Training
McCann Dogs is another fabulous online source for free video tutorials. These professional trainers walk you through the basics of how to train your new puppy and how to train yourself to be a good pet parent! Take a look at some of their puppy training playlists. We found these incredibly helpful when creating Duke’s training schedule.

Dog Training by Kikopup
Emily Larlham, also known as Kikopup offers a ton of free in-depth dog training tutorials on her YouTube channel. Her clicker training videos were incredibly helpful when we were trying to train Navy with our clicker.

American Kennel Club
Whether your new puppy is a purebred dog, or a rescue mutt, the American Kennel Club’s website is a wealth of information for new puppy owners. We absolutely love their weekly email newsletter. This customized and age specific email offers expert puppy advice and answers to your most commonly asked questions.

Dog Food Advisor
The Dog Food Advisor website rates and reviews almost every dog food brand on the market. We love that their reviews are unbiased and you can search for the right food by brand and star rating. They also have a recall section and newsletter you can sign up for to see if your brand of choice has any open recalls.

ASPCA – Animal Poison Control
ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (APCC) is your absolute best resource for any animal poison-related emergency. Their site offers a comprehensive list of critical information pet owners should know to keep their pets safe.

Puppy Tip
Need another puppy resource newsletter in your inbox? Look no further! We absolutely adore Puppy Tip’s weekly emails. These newsletters are packed with tips to help you become a savvier pet parent.

BringFido
Think of BringFido as the Yelp of all things dog friendly. Use this website to search through thousands of places to stay, play, and eat with your dog.

Purina Puppy
Purina is so much more than dog food and treats! Experts write articles and offer tips about puppy training, nutrition, health, behavior and so much more.

Best Friends Animal Society
This is another fabulous website filled with tips and expert advice for the new furry addition to your family.

American College of Veterinary Behaviorists
This website we actually found recently and we wish we found it sooner! The American College of Veterinary Behaviorists list a ton of free resources, articles, and studies to help you choose the right dog, handle your pet at the vet, and how to find the best dog trainer for you.
Dog Bite Prevention

Family Paws
Have kids or are you expecting? We stumbled upon the Family Paws website when we were researching tips for introducing dogs to children. Navy was not the best with kids and I have a young niece.

Cardigan Welsh Corgi Club of America
We have two Cardigan Welsh Corgis so we turn to the CWCCA official webpage for breed specific information for our two pups. Don’t have a cardi? Most AKC registered breeds have their own official webpage.

The Dog People by Rover
Need pup tips, safety resources, recipes, or just want a good read? Check out Rover’s blog, The Dog People.

Puppy101 Reddit
Are you a Reddit fan like us? The Puppy101 thread is a great source for support and advice for puppy owners. Ask questions, discuss your pup’s behavior, or just vent!

We wish you the best of luck with your new puppy. As always, our email inbox and comment section is open if you have any additional questions. Check out the Puppy 101 section on our blog for even more advice (and cute Duke and Navy puppy photos).
