3 Easy DIY Patriotic Dog Treats

You know the Fourth of July is near when you see stores displaying all their red, white, and blue merchandise. When you drive down the road or take your dog for a walk you’ll see all the homes proudly displaying their American flags.

We LOVE the Fourth of July in our house, and we take it pretty seriously. Mom, the baker, always goes all out for her Fourth of July dessert goodies. This year, we decided to try and make some patriotic treats for the dogs as well. Our family is vacationing in the Outer Banks for the holiday week and it is hot hot hot! We put together 3 easy patriotic frozen treats to help the dogs stay cool. Each of these patriotic pupsicles require only 3 ingredients.

*Disclaimer: strawberries, blueberries, watermelon, and plain yogurt are okay for dogs in small quantities. We recommend only giving your pup one or two pupsicles at a time (if they are on the small size). We made the final recipe, our patriotic pupsicle larger so that all three pups could enjoy a few licks before it melted.

Red, White, and Blueberry Pupsicle Ice Cubes

Before you start:

This recipe has two versions: one with water, one with yogurt. The prep time for these icy treats took less than 5 minutes. We used a small ice cube tray we had picked up at the dollar store, so our ice cubes only took an hour and a half to freeze. If using a larger tray, or using yogurt instead of water, give these ice cubes an extra few hours to harden. As stated in our disclaimer above, be sure to only give a few of these treats to your pup, depending on the size of the cube and the dog!

Ingredients:

3-4 strawberries

8-10 blueberries

water or plain yogurt

Instructions:

1. Start with one clean ice cube tray. Cut the strawberries in small quarters, and half the blueberries.

2. Place 1-2 pieces of cut strawberry and blueberry in each section of the tray. (You can place more or less fruit depending on how big your tray is).

3. Add water (or plain yogurt) to each tray.

4. Place your tray on a level surface in the freezer.

5. ENJOY!

Patriotic Pupsicle

Before you start:

The prep time for this icy cool treat only took us 5 minutes. We made this treat larger so that all three dogs could enjoy. The GSP sisters are notorious ice consumers. As soon as the freezer door opens they come running! We recommend enjoying this treat outdoors so you do not stain anything as it quickly melts.

Ingredients:

4-5 cubes of watermelon (no seeds)

10-15 blueberries (we used defrosted frozen blueberries)

water

Instructions:

1. Mash your watermelon cubes and blueberries in separate bowls.

2. Layer your mashed watermelon first followed by your blueberries in a clear plastic container. Depending on how many pups will be enjoying this treat, we picked a longer container. We added another layer of watermelon as well (watermelon, blueberries, watermelon).

4. After freezing for a few hours, we added water to the final section of the container.

5. Enjoy — outdoors!
